Our founder’s journey started at Spacelabs Medical, developing clinical data repositories that served as the foundation for understanding how healthcare data systems work. This experience revealed both the immense power and frustrating limitations of traditional healthcare IT development.
The real awakening came at Baylor Scott & White Health, where our founder witnessed something remarkable: a health system spending over $50 million to build a custom patient portal because the industry-standard solutions weren’t good enough. Their myBSWHealth project proved that better was possible—but at a price only the largest health systems could afford.
Learning from Failure
At AmenitiesHealth, we attempted to democratize what Baylor had achieved by creating a white-label patient portal for multiple health systems. Despite interest from major healthcare organizations like Mercy and MemorialCare, the approach failed due to fundamental architectural flaws:
- Incompatible codebases across platforms
- Lack of true customization capabilities
- No way for health systems to extend functionality
- Closed-source bottlenecks that prevented innovation
These failures weren’t setbacks—they were lessons that shaped our vision for what healthcare technology should be.
